STARTUP VISA

The Opportunity to Bring your Innovation/Business to Canada?

Canada's Startup Visa (SUV) Program is intended to attract foreign entrepreneurs who wish to establish new, high-growth businesses in Canada which will support innovation and job creation.  To be eligible for the Startup Visa under this stream, entrepreneurs must be accepted into a program offered by a designated Canadian business incubator.

Calgary Technologies Inc. (previously under Innovate Calgary) is one of the business incubation programs designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

In addition to receiving a Letter of Support that will allow you to bring your business, your founding team, and your families to Canada, successful applicants will receive additional support from Calgary Technologies Inc. in the form of: 

  • Regular check points to assess progress
  • Business coaching & mentoring from our advisors and entrepreneurs-in-residence
  • Access to Entrepreneur Development programs & services
  • Connection point to Alberta’s advanced tech and startup ecosystem
  • Recommendations for grant applications and other financing 
  • Eligibility

    The first step is to ensure that you meet the Government of Canada’s Startup Visa Eligibility Criteria.

    To qualify, a business must:

    1. Be innovative
    2. Have the ability to create jobs for Canadians
    3. Be able to compete on a global stage 

    Should you meet the full criteria as set out by the Government of Canada, the next step is to meet the following CTI requirements:

    1. Have primary/secondary market research, with an emphasis on customer validation and market validation
    2. Demonstrate clear value in bringing the company to Calgary (i.e.: closer to key customers, suppliers, distributors, and/or channel partners)
    3. Have sufficient funds to carry the company and your family through the next 2+ years - CTI does not provide financial support or incentives
    4. Solid team in place:
      1. Ability to demonstrate each team member (applicant) is an integral part of business operations and has the background to execute the business plan

    The Start-up Visa (SUV) Program application process is highly competitive and incomplete applications will not be considered.

    Should you meet the criteria as set out by the Government of Canada and CTI, the next step is to begin our application process.

    Please submit the following documents to advisor@calgarytechnologies.com:

    1. Resumes (work experience and education) of applicants, as well as short descriptions of each applicant's role in the proposed venture 

    2. Pitch deck - 10-minute presentation (slides only) that describe you and your venture focused on what an investor would want to see

    3. A 3-4 page business case - rather than a full business plan and projected financials, we prefer to see a shorter document that describes the business case:
      1. What is the problem you are trying to solve, and what is your proposed solution
      2. What work have you completed to prove customers have the above problem, and are willing to pay for your solution. Provide evidence
      3. Describe your key partnerships (why Calgary, why now, why your team)
      4. Describe your business development plan. How do you plan to acquire customers?
      5. Describe your financial plan. How do you plan to fund the first two years of development and operations?
